Joanne Calderwood Talks Submission Loss and Health Scare

Chris Simpson

Joanne Calderwood suffered a devastating submission loss at UFC Vegas 5 on Saturday, but that was just a footnote in what transpired to be a worrying evening for her. The Scottish flyweight fainted backstage, whilst she was having her post-fight medical screenings.

"JoJo" fell to a first-round armbar at the hands of Jennifer Maia at the event and many were confused as to why she had taken the fight, as she was the number one contender for a bout with Valentina Shevchenko. Calderwood claimed she was restless and just wanted to get back into the octagon, but unfortunately, everyone's fears were soon materialised. Though the disappointment was quickly overshadowed by concern from all when she passed out shortly after the fight, backstage.

Joanne was taken immediately to hospital and remained there overnight, whilst routine checks were made. Her management team insist that she is "now well and resting at home". Calderwood took to her Instagram today to address the loss and the health-scare.

“Well, that was a rough night at the office,” Calderwood posted. “Congratulations to Jennifer Maia. I’m so grateful for my family, friends and fans that are here to help pick me back up in this crazy life we all share. It’s a fight, every day we all fight, but it’s not every day it goes our way. Thanks to all the @ufc staff, the medics and docs at UMC. Oh and my knight in shining armour @bigwoodmma702, sorry for scaring you babe! #nevergiveup

It remains to be seen what the next steps are for the flyweight contender, but I think I speak for everyone in saying I'm glad she's well and nothing serious seems to be wrong.
