The hype train of Edmen Shahbazyan was halted abruptly this weekend when Derek Brunson ended the youngster's undefeated streak.
While only 22 years old, Shahbazyan had impressed a lot of people during his run in the UFC, with commentator Jon Anik revealing he believed the middleweight was one of the best 185lb fighters in the world.
Time will tell how Shahbazyan will deal with his very first loss, whether he'll overcome it and learn from the experience, or whether it will truly bring an end to any sort of momentum he could muster. We've seen it all to many times where an undefeated fighter loses there first fight and never gets over it. One loss and their careers just never recover.
Here are five examples of undefeated UFC fighters who struggled to overcome their first ever loss.
Thomas Almeida

One of the most perfect examples of how a hot prospect's career can just derail following one loss, Thomas Almeida's KO loss to Cody Garbrandt just destroyed his career.
Coming into the fight, both men were undefeated, but Almeida had the much more impressive record. With a record of 20-0 coming in, the Brazilian had finished 19 of his opponents and looked unstoppable. Two minutes and 53 seconds late, Garbrandt had put Almeida to sleep and that was that. Two losses out of his next three fights has seen the once hot prospect lose all his momentum.
Having been out of action since January 2018 with an eye/vision issue, it's unclear whether we'll ever see Almeida back in the octagon.
Chris Weidman

Man, the downward slope Chris Weidman's career has fallen down over the last few years is tragic.
Following one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, Weidman beat the all-time great Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title. Three straight title fights against Silva again, Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort, saw the American's record rise to 13-0 and the world was at his feet.
Then he ran into Luke Rockhold at UFC 194 back in December 2015 and everything changed. Following a back and forth start, Rockhold really took charge in the later rounds and eventually TKO'd Weidman on the ground. He was never the same after that and the former middleweight champion has lost four of the five fights he's had since that night, being finished in every single one of them.
Now at 36 years old, Weidman isn't even ranked anymore and there's a lot of talk about a potential retirement heading into his fight with Omari Akhmedov at the weekend.
Joanna Jędrzejczyk

At one point one of the most dominant champions in the UFC, Joanna Jędrzejczyk burst into the octagon back in 2014 and beat the brakes off of everyone she faced, including one of the most dominant title fights we've ever seen when she battered Carla Esparza to win the strawweight title.
Joanna won her first eight fights inside the octagon, including six title fights, to push her record to 14-0 heading into her title fight with Rose Namajunas. Heading into the fight many expected Joanna to run through Thug Rose on her way to yet another title defence, but Namajunas had other ideas.
Thug Rose quickly KO'd Joanna to win the title and the Polish fighter was never the same. After losing the rematch with Namajunas by decision, JJ has now lost two of her last four fights and is no longer looked at as the dominant force she once was.
Cody Garbrandt

Having stopped Thomas Almeida's undefeated streak 18 months previous, Cody Garbrandt saw his own streak savagely ended when TJ Dillashaw TKO'd him at UFC 217.
What followed was two more brutal losses with Garbrandt being put to sleep in both. This was the man that had dominated the greatest bantamweight of all-time in Dominick Cruz and just over two years later, three straight losses spelt trouble.
Luckily, Garbrandt recently put the losing streak to an end and KO'd Raphael Assuncao. Only time will tell if he's truly turned a corner.
Ronda Rousey

Never has a loss truly altered a fighter's career trajectory the way it did with 'Rowdy' Ronda Rousey. An early pioneer for women's MMA, at the height of her dominance, Rousey was a true megastar.
Rousey dominated anyone put in her path and was the sole reason women ever got the chance to fight in the UFC. Only making it to the third round once, Rousey finished everyone she faced and many questioned whether she would ever be beaten.
Up steps Holly Holm and in one of the most shocking results in UFC history, Holm dominated Rousey from the get-go. She exposed Rousey's lacklustre striking and defender her takedowns excellently before kicking Rowdy's head off. Rousey went into a state of turmoil following the loss and many doubted whether she'd ever return to the octagon.
A year later she did and she was quickly brutalised by Amanda Nunes in just 48 seconds and Rousey is yet to return. Truly shocking.
